The Melfort Dance Centre has taught thousands of dancers and celebrated their 25th year with three performances of “25 Years of Dance; Dare to Dream” at the CJVR Performing Arts Theatre in the Kerry Vickar Centre on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12.

“It’s surreal, it seems just like yesterday that we were starting here in Melfort and it’s definitely been a journey and one that I will treasure every moment,” Paulette Puetz founder of the Melfort Dance Centre said.

The two hour performance included performances in all genres and of all ages. This year there was only one graduating dancer.

She explained that the Dance Centre started in the old Melfort Elks Hall in September of 1994. It then moved to a location on Saskatchewan Avenue and then to the current location of the Bargain Shop on Main Street. They then moved to their current location on Bemister Avenue.

“The new place is perfect we have been there for 10 years now and it’s a wonderful facility,” Puetz said.

The circle has been completed as former student’s children are currently students.

“There is a few students or former students whose children are now dancing with us, full circle,” she explained.

The Dance Centre is not only about dance skills it is also about life skills according to Puetz.

“It is things that they can definitely use in their life after dance whether they pursue it as a career or not. And the friendships that they build are lifelong friendships. We are a family and we have got each other’s backs no matter what,”

Puetz, who is originally from the Muenster area and has felt welcomed by the community.

“And you know what I couldn’t have done it without the support of the community and the city and surrounding area. To make it 25 years and I have had wonderful staff that have worked along my side. We have now got 180 students and we are teaching in two studios four days a week,” she said.

They changed up the ending of this year’s performance with a slide show about the history of the Melfort Dance Centre
