Construction was to start almost immediately after the announcement last week that enough money had been raised to start building a helipad on the Melfort hospital.
Members of a fundraising committee, led by former MLA Rod Gantefoer, representatives of the City of Melfort and local fundraisers met in front of a backhoe parked to the north of the hospital on Wednesday, July 29 for a sod turning ceremony.
“It feels very good,” said Gantefoer of having the project get a green light. “What is means is a two way street. If you have a tragedy in Carrot River, Naicam or wherever, the helicopter can now go from helipad to helipad.”
If Nipawin is successful in its efforts to also have a helipad at their hospital, the two communities will work together to make them work seamlessly.
“When that comes online there will be talk and co-operation and discussion between the medical professionals to take greatest advantage,” said Gantefoer.
