Badminton season is nearly complete at MUCC as various teams and singles have qualified for NESSAC Badminton. Teams and singles players advanced after pod playoffs were played in Melfort on Wednesday, April 10. They will now compete at NESSAC Playoffs in Nipawin on Thursday, April 18.

Because of a lengthy basketball season again this year some athletes were not available early in the season.

“Again with our girls going to Hoopla we had to wait for a couple of those girls to be done basketball before we got them. Other than that our team is looking all right, we are really young this year, we have a lot of Grade 10s, which is nice for next year,” Comets’ badminton coach Dave Russell said.

“But we still have competitive teams for Grade 11 and 12 and in league play our Grade 10s have been competitive too so it has been a really good learning experience for them to kind of see what is going on,” he explained.

The top three players or teams in the playoff advanced, except in girl’s doubles where the top two advanced. Teams from Notre Dame Choiceland and Naicam competed in the Melfort pod.

Nick Flegel from Choiceland Tim Robbins and Kris Jan Remonde from Melfort and advanced in the boys’ singles division.

In girl’s singles Danielle Thibault from Choiceland was first, Grace Chamberlain from Choiceland was second and  Yshie Mendiola from Melfort was third.

In boys doubles three Melfort teams advanced including Dagan Carlson and Jakob Atkinson who placed first, Peter Laosebikan and Tyson Arndt who finished second and Ethan Heffernan and Nathan Hufnagel who placed third. Two Melfort teams also advanced in girl’s doubles with Lexi Beuker and Alexa Hangs-Copeland placing first and  Kaela Jago and Emma Tremblay finishing second.
