In a back-and-forth affair the Melfort Mustangs lost their second straight at home 6-5 in overtime to the Battlefords North Stars to fall behind 3-1 in the Canalta Cup final on Wednesday, April 17. Kaden Boser scored the overtime winner 8:31 into the extra frame for the North Stars.
The North Stars led 2-1 after the first period and 3-2 after the second period.
Carson Albrecht had a pair of goals for the Mustangs; Tyson Meyers, Colin Schmidt and Tanner Zentner added the other Melfort goals in regulation. Albrecht tied the game two minutes into the third period.
Elijah Loon-Stewardson had a pair of goals for the North Stars; Braydon Buziak, Ryan Granville and Owen Lamb added the other regulation time goals.
Noah Giesbrecht made 37 saves for the Mustangs; Joel Gryzbowski made 36 saves for the North Stars.
The North Stars can clinch the SJHL title on Good Friday in North Battleford. If necessary, Game 6 will be in Melfort on Easter Sunday.
