One MUCC badminton team advances to Regionals

Only one Melfort Comets’ badminton team advanced to SHSAA Regional Badminton in Melfort on Saturday, May 4. The team of Chelsea Olson and Calvin Dyck won the mixed doubles title at NESSAC Badminton in Nipawin on Thursday, April 18.

Olson and Dyck were first and Lexi Yurkowski and Matt Retzlaff of Carrot River were second. The top two teams or players advanced in each category. Jody Dawson and Merrick Nysteun of Naicam placed third.

In boys’ singles Tim Robins of MUCC placed third. Advancing were Ben Hamelin of Porcupine Plain and Clark Aylward of Carrot River.

In girl’s singles Yshie Mendola of Melfort placed third. Two Choiceland players, Danielle Thibault and Grace Chamberlain advanced to regionals.

In girl’s doubles the team of Alexa Hangs-Copeland and Lexi Beuker of Melfort placed third. Advancing were the teams of Kira Comfort and Mikayla Woodward of Nipawin and Richelle Pompu and Tessa Yurkowski of Carrot River.

In boy’s doubles two Nipawin teams advanced with the teams of Kyle Froehlich and Kolton Burke as well as Kyler Opp and Dylan Peterson advancing. The team of Albert Trew and Trey Hardie from Carrot River placed third.

SHSAA Regional Badminton is in Melfort on Saturday, May 4 and is expected to start at 10 a.m.
